Relay Turf Elite - Selective Herbicide

MAPP no. 19633

Active substances: Mecoprop-P, MCPA and Dicamba

Relay Turf Elite is a selective herbicide containing three different active substances for effective control of a wide variety of weeds. Relay Turf Elite can be used on all managed amenity turf and amenity grassland surfaces including golf courses, playing fields and sports pitches. The active substances in Relay Turf Elite are effective against many broadleaved weeds including chickweed, knotgrass, speedwell, and redshank.

Relay Turf Elite is primarily absorbed into the plant through the foliage and works best when target plants are small and actively growing. It can be used as part of an integrated turf management plan to maintain high quality, weed free turf surfaces.

For the ability to target an even wider range of weeds it is recommended that Relay Turf Elite is tank mixed with Duplosan® KV and Depitox® 500. Together the active substances in these products work to tackle the vast majority of weeds in turf surfaces.

Target species

Relay Turf Elite can be used to treat a wide range of common broadleaved weeds in grass and turf surfaces. It is particularly effective against:

  • Black bindweed
  • Chickweed
  • Fat-hen
  • Forget-me-not
  • Knotgrass
  • Poppy
  • Redshank

Further details about susceptible weeds can be found on the product label.

Application recommendations

Where to use

  • Amenity grassland: Areas of semi-natural or planted grassland subject to minimal or non-intensive management including airfields and predominantly grassed railway embankments and roadside verges.
  • Managed amenity turf: Areas of frequently mown, (i.e. mown at least once a week) intensively managed turf, including fields being used for turf production. May include areas for public use including all types of sports turf, golf greens, tees and fairways.

When to use

Apply to actively growing grass between April-September.

  • Allow newly sown turf to become established before applying
  • Control will be most effective when used on young, actively growing weeds
Application window
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

How to use

    • Apply to turf or grass using a vehicle mounted boom sprayer
    • Apply at a rate of 5 l/ha in 170-400 l/ha
    • Part fill the spray tank with clean water and start agitation
    • Add the correct amount of Relay Turf Elite to the spray tank
    • Fill spray tank with remaining water and continue agitating to ensure thorough mixing
    • Maintain agitation until spraying is completed
    • After use thoroughly clean both the inside and outside of all spraying equipment, fill the tank with clean water and leave overnight
Maximum Treatments Application Rate Water Volume Application Method Spray Quality
1 per annum 5L/ha 170-400L/ha Vehicle mounted boom sprayer Medium

Additional information

    • Do not apply by hand-held equipment
    • Avoid rolling or harrowing the surface for at least a few days before or after application
    • Do not apply during drought, if rain is expected or when the weather is cold or frosty
    • Avoid mowing for 24 hours (closely cut turf) or for 3 days (all other turf) before or after treatment
    • Do not re-seed for 6-8 weeks after treatment
    • Turf sown in spring may be ready for spraying after about 2 months but turf sown later in the year should not be sprayed until about 8 months after treatment
    • Do not use first 4 mowings for mulching unless composted for 6 months
    • Avoid contact with non-target plants

Tank mix recommendations

Relay Turf Elite can be tank mixed with Duplosan KV and Depitox 500 to extend the number of weed species that are targeted. Depitox 500 will control a wide range of common broadleaved and rosette forming turf weeds whilst Duplosan KV is ideal for controlling annual weeds and broadleaved perennials with a spreading habit such as creeping buttercup.

Add the products to the tank using the following order and application rates:

Product Application rate
Relay Turf Elite 4 l/ha
Duplosan KV 1.2 l/ha
Depitox 500 1.5 l/ha

Use a water rate of 300-500 l/ha adding half of the volume to the spray tank before the herbicides and the remaining amount of water after whilst agitating the liquid to ensure thorough mixing.

Active substances

Dicamba, MCPA and Mecoprop-P

Bio-Chemical Mode of Action: Dicamba, MCPA and Mecoprop-P all belong to the synthetic auxins group of herbicides. Synthetic auxins work by inducing rapid abnormal cell growth and development in the stems, petioles and leaves of susceptible plants causing cell bursts and ultimately cell and plant death.

Mobility: All three active substances are systemic penetrants which means that the active substance can be translocated downwards through the plant within the phloem (sugar conducting tissues) and upwards through the plant within the xylem (water conducting tissues).

Application timing: Systemic auxins are best applied when the weeds are actively growing. They are generally more effective when target plants are younger and in their vegetative phases.

Resistance: The incidences of resistance to synthetic auxins remains relatively low which is assumed to be because the herbicide has multiple sites of action.

However, resistance to synthetic auxins has been observed globally with 36 species being confirmed as resistant as of 2017. Best management practices, such as alternating with products with a different mode of action and using cultural weed control methods, will help to reduce the risk of further resistance.
