Granular fertilisers provide nutrition that can support plant growth and health and come in a variety of different analyses and can be formulated quite differently. When deciding what fertiliser to use here are some key pints you may want to consider
Weather
When the weather is cooler and turf growth is slower it is usually advisable to use a fertiliser with a lower concentration of nitrogen. Conversely during the late spring and summer months turf can grow rapidly and therefore needs more nitrogen in order to support this growth.
Application frequency
Granular fertilisers have different longevities depending on the source of nitrogen or the technology used to slow down its release. For example:
· Conventional granular fertilisers typically release nitrogen over a period of 2-6 weeks
· Organo-mineral and slow release fertilisers can feed plants for around 6-12 weeks
· Controlled fertilisers use coatings to control the release of nutrients and can feed plants for 12 or more weeks.
Type of turf
Smaller granule sizes are generally used to provide nutrition to fine turf areas. Sports turf and other areas that have a higher height of cut can be feed using fertilisers with larger granule sizes.
Other properties
It is important to consider what else you may want your fertiliser to do. Some offer a package of trace elements or biostimulants which can provide additional turf health benefits. Other fertilisers can contain selective herbicides or moss control components and are known as weed, feed and moss control products.
