WRAP encourages Greenkeepers to tee off for Recycled products
Research commissioned by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) into the use of recycled products in golf course management is proving that recycled materials can perform as well as, and in some cases better than traditional materials. Visitors to the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition at the Harrogate International Centre, January 18-20, will be able to see a wide range of these recycled products showcased on the WRAP stand, Q11.
The innovative products on the WRAP stand will be made using recycled materials such as glass, plastic, wood and organics. These products are growing in popularity as many offer significant performance benefits including durability, cost effectiveness and low maintenance. As well as these performance related characteristics, using quality recycled alternatives to traditional materials such as peat and sand also reduces golf courses' environmental impact.
Products featured on the stand will include:
Processed sand - an innovative alternative to natural sand. Developed using recycled glass, it has undergone two years of trials with the STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute). Processed sand is an excellent bunker sand, reducing plugging of the ball and is able to lay at a steeper angle. Suitable for use in divot repair and top dressing, the sand's natural green tint provides an added aesthetic benefit. Processed sand also improves drainage when used in root zone construction.
Wood chips - an ideal option for use as a mulch in landscaping - they are low maintenance, wind resistant and a highly effective weed suppressant. They are also available in a range of colours for use on shrub beds or in pathing.
Recycled plastic - an extremely durable range of products including artificial tees, drainage systems, ground stabilisation grids, outdoor furniture, signage and fencing.
Compost - derived from grass cuttings, prunings and leaves, compost can be used as top dressing, turf establisher, mulch or soil improver. It is particularly beneficial when used in divot repair as it aids re-growth and can suppress the pathogenic organisms that cause turf disease.

Over the last year, the selection of recycled products suited to the golfing sector has continued to grow and we will be showcasing many of these at the 2005 show."
