Euro 2004 stadium gets maximum score from UEFA.

Following an inspection tour of the Euro 2004 stadia, UEFA awarded 5 stars to the José Alvalade stadium. This new stadium was given top marks because of its architecture, acoustics and the quality of the grass pitch.

The special design of the stadium has implications for the playing surface. Every seat in the 50,000 capacity stadium is covered by its innovative roof construction. This, together with the rounding out of the seating bowl, creates an environment which makes it very difficult for the grass to grow. For this reason DD GrassMaster, a reinforced grass pitch system produced by Desso DLW Sports Systems, was selected. By using this system, the organisers of Euro 2004 can be sure of a high quality grass pitch.
Five matches will be played in the José Alvalade stadium, among them a Euro 2004 semi final. After Euro 2004, thanks to the good acoustics and the reinforced pitch other events such as concerts can take place. In this way the financial cost of building this stadium can be justified. Next year the stadium will host the finals of the UEFA Cup.

The stadium is also the home of Sporting Lisbon. Top clubs like Real Madrid, Liverpool FC, Lokomotiv Moskou and Feyenoord, are already convinced about DD GrassMaster. They all play on this grass re-inforcement system in their stadiums.

Over 20 million artificial grass fibres are injected about 20 cm deep, by a specialised machine, into a natural grass pitch. As the roots of the natural grass grow they intertwine with the artificial fibres. These artificial fibres form approximately 3% of the whole pitch and anchor the grass roots, giving a very stable grass surface.
