Remnants of Hurricane Danielle offers new flood alert

People in the South West have been warned to brace themselves for more flooding over the weekend as the remnants of Hurricane Danielle move across the Atlantic towards British shores. The Met Office issued a severe weather warning for Devon and Cornwall as a band of heavy rain is expected to move gradually eastwards across the area.

Sunday will be the gloomiest day, with heavy showers expected to hit the South West around lunchtime before gradually spreading across the country. The wind is also expected to freshen up and become quite strong in western parts.

A Met Office spokesman said: "There is a chance of flooding in some parts as another low pressure system is coming through with some heavy rain in it on Sunday. It's the remnants of the air mass that was Hurricane Danielle that's coming across the Atlantic, picking up moisture on the way. "It will reach the South West first and the rain will arrive at around 12pm on Sunday and then move across the UK on Monday so many places will be seeing rain as well."

Heading into the weekend, showers were forecast for the South East, East Anglia, the Midlands, and the South West -possibly stretching a little further north.

Heavy rain warnings have been issued for the Midlands, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Wales, and in the North West and northern parts of the country. The forecast for Saturday is brighter for southern parts as the band of rain heads up the country.

Dry, sunny spells are expected in the South West and central parts of England and Wales, while outbreaks of rain are forecast over north-east England and eastern Scotland, with a chance of heavy showers and thunder.
