Established in 1561, Merchant Taylor School is an independent day school for boys aged eleven to eighteen years.

Originally located in the City of London it has been sited on two hundred and fifty acres of grounds at Sandy Lodge in the Three Rivers district of Hertfordshire since 1933.

In autumn 2012 the school took delivery of a Redexim Verti-Drain 2216, through their local Charterhouse dealer George Browns to help improve and regenerate their eighty acres of rugby and football pitch surfaces.

Gerald Norman of the grounds maintenance team was very vocal about the purchase, "Our previous machine could sometimes take most of a working day to complete just the one pitch, but the 2216 makes light work of it.

That's one of the main benefits - its superior operating speed resulting in real time savings. We use it in tandem with our 50hp tractor and its capabilities extend to a wide range of hard or soft surfaces.

The Verti-Drain 2216 has power to de-compact the sub-surface layer to a depth of 24cm (9.5in) allied with an ability to work at high speed in hard soils.

It also has suitability for working on more undulating areas which help to make the tough 2216 an excellent option for the widest range of sports surface regeneration work.

Weighing in at just 840kg it can be mounted with a compact tractor of 45hp minimum and offers a more than adequate and productive working width and depth of 160cm and 225mm respectively.

Gerald again, "We can have quite a short time window some times, the hydraulic height adjuster is a really useful function to enable us to quickly adjust and set the required tine depth to achieve the best combination of surface speed and tine penetration."

Standard supplied items are solid 18 x 225mm tines, front and rear rollers with scrapers, pto with slip clutch and a storage stand with toolbox and tools, while options include solid 5mm x 125mm and 24mm x 225mm tines, hollow 10mm x 125mm and 32mm x 225mm tines, Windrow kit, and adaptors for different tine diameters.

Additionally, via an optional hydraulic depth adjustment system, the penetration of the tines can be adjusted from the tractor seat with clear visibility of the set depth.
