Mulch manufactured from supplies of waste wood has become an unlikely star performer on Britain's golf courses.

Wood mulch, or wood chip, produced from recycling wood products such as pallets, is increasingly being used as a cost-effective material for landscaping and surfacing around courses.

Recycled wood mulch has proved to be a particularly versatile material, and can be applied to golf course walkways, flower and shrub beds and around teeing areas.

Wood mulch products are an increasingly available and cost effective resource, possessing a number of valuable qualities, such as softness underfoot, absorbency, as well as being low-impact on cutting and maintenance equipment and a weed suppressor.

Tom Fourcade, head of the recycle wood programme at WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), explains: "Recycled wood mulch is proving a very popular product amongst greenkeepers who have recognised that the material is both cost effective and versatile.

"As well as landscaping applications and the labour saving benefits of applying the product to shrub beds, it also has an aesthetic value as users can, for example, specify the desired colour."

Tom continues: "To assist companies in finding out more about the application of recycled wood mulch, WRAP has produced a number of case studies which are available on request by calling 0808 100 2040."
Tom concludes: "Wood mulch is an excellent example of how a recycled product can offer a specific market genuine added value."

The golf sector is just one of a number of sectors that have benefited from the application of mulch manufactured from recycled wood. The material has also proved ideal as a soft covering for children's play areas where significantly lower whole life costs have been demonstrated".
