Mark Johnston wants groundsmen to get a grip
Johnston has warned racecourse maintainers of
the potential dangers that the watered grass can offer.And in his latest edition of Kingsley Klarion. the Yorkshire-based handler says racecourses should be watered only to promote the growth of grass without altering the state of the surface.
"In the past, trainers had to accept what nature gave them and were there more nonrunners then? I'm sure there weren't," the qualified vet claimed.
"I am convinced that the condition of our tracks has suffered in recent years due to regular watering.
"Trainers would agree with my view that a significant number of horses struggle with the loose ground that results from watering."
Johnston said the rules on shoeing at the tighter and more undulating tracks needed to change if horses were to run on watered surfaces.
