WRAP Golf Course Case Study

The Waste & Resources Action Programme *(WRAP) has produced a number of Case Studies relating to the use of recyclable material on golf courses. Two, relating to compost and wood chipping at Epping and Erskine Golf Courses respectively, have been published by Pitchare previously and can be found via this link. The latest study relates to processed sand used at Carden Park.

• Carden Park Golf Course Carden Park has an environmentally conscious outlook and is leading the way in its positive approach to recycling. The course has introduced a number of innovative schemes including a system to recycle all its waste water. In addition, all grass cuttings are composted on site into mulch and used in any landscaping projects throughout the year. Trials of processed sand in the practice bunkers took place during the 2004 PGA Seniors Golf Tournament. The reaction of players to the bunker indicated that playing performance differed very little from natural sand. Carden Park made use of the remaining sand in divot repairs and as a top dressing on the fairways. Play performance was unaffected by the change in material (in fact STRI reports show that using processed sand provides firmer underfoot conditions). Carden Park believes processed sand is a worthwhile alternative to natural sand and is a way to introduce 'greener' materials without compromising play performance or the condition of the course. *WRAP (www.wrap.org.uk) is a not-for-profit company in the private sector, backed by substantial Government funding from DEFRA, DTI and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Originally established to promote sustainable waste management and create stable and efficient markets for recycled materials and products, WRAP's remit has recently been extended to include a set of new programmes for England. The new work comprises: a Household Waste Minimisation Programme; an Organics Market Development programme to provide material specific support and investment to the composting sector; the development of an Advisory Service to local authorities - the Recycling and Organics Technical Advisory Team (ROTATE); and a Waste Communications and Awareness programme.

WRAP has laid down targets across nine programmes - six material streams (paper, plastics, glass, wood, organics and aggregates) and three generic areas (Procurement, Financial Mechanisms and Standards and Specifications).
