First X-WAM wide-area mowers delivered to two UK turf growers
The first Trimax X-WAM wide-area rotary mowers to be sold into the UK turf industry have been put to work by two of the country's leading turf growers, Inturf and Lindum Turf Ltd, both companies having their headquarters near York.
Supplied to the two well-known turf growers by specialist Trimax dealer, Campey Turf Care Systems, the X-WAM has a 10.4m (34ft) width of cut making it the widest commercially- available rotary roller mower in Europe.
The sale of two identical high-value machines by Campey into the UK market secured an outstanding sales achievement award for the firm from Trimax.
Previously, the only X-WAM supplied by Trimax within the United Kingdom had been to Knotty Hill Golf Centre in County Durham, where it is being used each week throughout the growing season to mow 54 fairways.
Stephen Fell, managing director of Lindum Turf, explained that the decision to purchase the X-WAM resulted from a series of demonstrations arranged by Campey Product Specialist David Briggs following the 2013 TGA show.
Campey provided both turf growers with an opportunity to see the mower in action on their own turf.
"Our staff were impressed above all with the X-WAM's build quality and the finish it produced at speed," he said. "The timing of the demonstration was perfect as we were reviewing our mowing methods at the time and were actively looking for a suitable rotary mower capable of reducing costs while still maintaining a high cutting quality.
Thanks to the X-WAM's super-wide cut, we are now able to carry out regular trimming of our turf with one less mowing outfit, saving the cost of a man and tractor without any reduction in the area of turf that can be mown during a normal working day."
Joint managing director of Inturf, Stephen Edwards, said that the firm had been looking at wider-area mowing systems for some time and had settled on the X-WAM for several reasons.
"We had seen the mower working at two TGA Turf Shows and liked the fact that it has full-width rollers front and rear which, we felt, would prevent any risk of scalping," he explained.
"A second plus point was the excellent up-draught from the high-lift cutting blades, helping the mower produce a close, even cut across the full mowing width, further enhanced by the even dispersal of grass clippings."
Add to these factors the machine's build quality and high work rate, and Stephen Edwards said there was little doubt that the X-WAM would get the nod when t
he decision was made by Inturf to invest in a wide-area rotary roller mower."Like many other professional turf growers, we expect our new machine to dovetail with our existing multi-gang cylinder mowers," he added. "Where the X-WAM will score highly is in its ability to cut large areas of quality turf quicker while still leaving an excellent finish.
We hope also that it will allow us to get onto newer sowings earlier and cut grass that is longer and damper than a cylinder-type machine can comfortably handle without clumping."
