Find me a job! - Peter Hampton

Position sought - Training or sales territory management

Location - Wiltshire/South West of England

Peter Hampton's situation is a little different to the other candidates we have featured in the 'Find me a job!' campaign to date, in that he has always been an equipment supplier.

He was made redundant from Bernhards in February 2009 and is now approaching his 64th birthday.

His career began in the garden machinery business in 1963, straight from school, and since completing an apprenticeship he has always worked within the professional grass machinery supply chain as dealer sales manager or a manufacturer's regional manager.

Peter's last position was with Bernhard and Company, initially as territory manager for western USA and Canada and latterly southern area territory manager in the UK, supplying mower sharpening equipment mostly to golf clubs.

He has a great deal of experience performing technical PowerPoint seminars and demonstrations for large groups of turf managers both in the USA and the UK. He has also sharpened and set up large fleets of mowers for golf tournaments both in the UK and North America.

My experience with lawnmowers of all types is unique, having sold the first Ransomes Motor Triples (1965), supplied Toro Equipment when it first arrived in the UK (1968) with Flymo, and in the early 1970s helped set up dealerships and market Jacobsen Turf Equipment when the full professional range was first imported by Rolfes Mini Tractors, later Marshall Concessionaires.

He owns a large collection of vintage golf course equipment and is the current Chairman of The Old Lawnmower Club. He has provided the museum exhibit of old golf course machinery for BIGGA at BTME in Harrogate on a number of occasions over the last 10 years and has volunteered to provide a Centenary Exhibit for 2012.

More recently Peter has carried out user training for Bernhards on an as-needed basis and sharpened at Celtic Manor Resort last summer for The Wales Open. He has also written several machinery-related articles for the Pitchcare magazine.

Having been for several interviews with prospective employers without success, Peter is concerned that his age causes concern.

"I am a hands-on field salesman and always have been," he explains.

"My ideal job would be a training or sales territory management position that would allow me to use my experience with end-users and be a useful asset to a professional grass machinery company's sales team for about the next five years, before I finally retire."

"I have no health problems, a clean driving licence and have built up many good relationships and contacts with the machinery dealers, golf course greenkeepers and public authority purchasers over the years."

Peter is willing to commute a reasonable distance for the right opportunity.
