ALAN LEWIS NDT FInstG, 39, has now become a full-time Technical Director with independent sports turf consultancy Total Turf Solutions (TTS).

"My main role will be running the consultancy and training division," says Alan. ''Our wide-ranging services include looking at all aspects of the management and facilities of a club and offering an email and telephone helpline.''

"On the training side we offer a comprehensive base - from covering the management of surfaces up to the pure management of staff and resources."

Winning Master Groundsman in 1991, Alan provides a wealth of technical and practical experience to the client. For ten years he worked at Shrewsbury School as Head Groundsman. He is a senior lecturer and examiner for the Institute of Groundsmanship, covering a full range and level of courses. This year Alan will complete his MSc in Sports Surface Technology at Cranfield University.

"It may sound strange but work really is also my main vocation" says Alan, "and I enjoy travelling and sports in general."

Fellow Technical Director David Bates says: "Alan has been working part-time for TTS and we decided he should now become a full-time member of the team, as we want to move the company further forward."

Founded by David and Alan three years ago, TTS has been appointed consultants to the prestigious Rugby Football Union contract, aimed at improving grass-roots playing surfaces.

"Our wealth of experience in project managing something of the size of the RFU project means we can bring benefits to smaller clubs too," says David.
"Our aim is to improve playing surfaces within the industry and the image of the dedicated staff who look after these sports surfaces."
