Award-winning groundsman says snow has been 'a nightmare'

"It's a nightmare," is how Andy Green responds after being asked what it's like to be a groundsman this winter.

Green, 47, has been the sole pitch keeper at Braintree Town for 15 years, but without the benefit of undersoil heating or heat lamps like at Premiership grounds and without even the aid of large tarpaulins, he faces a constant uphill battle to get any game to go ahead when freezing temperatures hit.

"With rain and a waterlogged pitch you can work on getting a game on," he revealed. "But if a frost has set in there's nothing you can do. This time of year is so hard."

Through a combination of hard work, polystyrene and sunlight, Green and several volunteers managed to get the Cressing Road pitch ready for the Iron's Blue Square South home game against Bishop's Stortford on New Year's Day.
